Humble Beginnings & A Defining Choice

Glasson Metalworks was born in Welwyn Garden City in 1965. The business was started by our dad Reg Glasson, who had moved to WGC in the late fifties from East London. To him it was wonderful – a new council house, new schools for his young boys, and plenty of work.

The story of how he became a skilled man is an interesting one, that to us now is seemingly from a different world. At the age of fifteen he was a ‘fitter’s mate’ at Becton Gasworks in East Ham, apparently highly thought of for his ingenuity and enthusiasm. He was involved in an accident at the works in which his face and eyes were sprayed with a caustic chemical. He was given money for the bus fare and told to get himself to Moorfields Eye Hospital on City Road where he received treatment. He had some nasty burns but fortunately no permanent injuries.

A management representative of the company arranged to meet him together with our nan and grandad at their home in Wellstead Road, East Ham, to discuss compensation. Two choices were proposed…the first offer was a small sum of money, the second offer was an engineering apprenticeship. Grandad (who also worked at the gasworks as a drayman) was all for the money as he needed a new push bike and the offer would just about cover it. But nan thought otherwise…she insisted on the apprenticeship. She was a strong woman, our nan, and grandad would have to suffer with his old push bike. An apprenticeship it was.

Building a Craft in a Growing Town

During the fifties and early sixties WGC saw tremendous industrial and commercial growth. On moving out of East London dad first worked at Jack Oldings in Hatfield, but when the company moved operations to Suffolk in 1960, he found new employment in the booming plastics industry in WGC, where he honed his skills as a toolmaker for companies such as Barnet Comb.

Our dad was always a cautious man, but even so, after a meeting in 1963 with another ‘WGC pioneer’, Tommy Ryan, buoyed by the optimistic mood in the town, they agreed to set up on their own in a small lock-up unit at Peartree Farm, known as Peartree Welding and Engineering Company.

In 1965 the men decided to go their different ways, and dad became a sole trader, working out of another unit at Peartree Farm.

Our dad thrived in the area, earning himself an excellent reputation with companies such as ICI Plastics, Polypenco, Suchard Chocolate, Murphy Radio and TV, and Roche Products.

A Family Legacy

That Continues

Dad retired in 1999, leaving the company to his son Alan, who had completed an engineering apprenticeship at Avdel (Aviation Developments) in WGC and been employed as an Engineer with British Aerospace before joining dad in the eighties. Another son David later joined the business having completed his engineering apprenticeship at Hawker Siddeley Aviation and working successfully as a designer in the oil/gas and pharmaceutical sectors.

We have a small team of skilled people including our Lead Fabricator who has been with us since he left school in the early eighties, and a Lead Installer who has been with us over 25 years.
